What is the KC FRINGE FESTIVAL?
A Celebration!

The third annual KC Fringe Festival will be a four-day event packed with live theatre, dance, performance art, visual art, spoken word, puppetry, storytelling, film and fashion. It’s a celebration of local, regional and national artists who will present events at venues throughout Kansas City July 26-29, 2007.

How to “Fringe”
First, check out the participants and scan the descriptions of shows. What looks interesting to you? Which venues are they in? What times do they perform? Plot out what you want to see, grab your friends and family, go forth and fringe!

Fringe Admission Buttons
A KC Fringe Festival button is required for anyone buying a ticket. Buttons are on sale for $5 each at all box offices and performance venues during the Festival. Make sure to wear your button to all shows. Along with entry, your Fringe Button allows you discounts at local business, restaurants, theaters and organizations. After the festival, keep your button and join our email list to receive updates regarding discounts from local businesses throughout the year.

The button sales help to defray Festival expenses. 100% of the ticket sales are paid to the artists and venues.

Want to Fringe for FREE? Volunteer!
The Kansas City Fringe Festival is looking for creative Kansas Citians to volunteer for the hippest festival this side of Woodstock. So, if you’re looking for an unforgettable experience and you dig meeting performers from across the country, click here for more information..

History of Fringe

Our roots trace to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, which spontaneously erupted in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1947. Eight groups, not invited to perform in the larger Edinburgh Festival of the Arts, created makeshift theatres on the outskirts - or "fringe" - of the established festival. Soon the Fringe Festival gained a large and loyal following, outstripping the mainstream festival.

Fringes around the world have adapted a simple formula that was created in Edinburgh. The main principles were to provide all artists (both emerging and established) with the opportunity to produce their play no matter the content, form or style, and to make the event as affordable and accessible as possible for the members of the community, empowering audiences with the ability to decide for themselves the truly great productions from the good, the bad, and the gloriously disastrous.

Today, the Fringes' guiding principles involve uncensored artistic expression, accessibility, and community development. The Fringe encourages artists and audiences to explore boundaries and make bold choices in the creation of art. The Fringe community is well established, existing worldwide. The KC Fringe Festival's goal is to provide artists an opportunity to create and perform new material right here in our back yard!

Why Fringe?
Fun! The festival develops audiences, stimulates economic growth and enhances the creative community at large. By making the arts readily visible, available and affordable, the festival will support and inspire local organizations year-round. The KC Fringe Festival is a service to the community, building bridges between audiences, artists, businesses and civic organizations.
